When I consider the history of Nursing Informatics and how this specialty has evolved with time, I recognize the profound impact it has had on my own career as a nurse. How have I seen informatics change during my nursing career?
As a new graduate, I drowned in paper documentation which proved to be tedious, repetitive, and overwhelming. I remember times where documentation on one patient took up to one hour. Over the course of my 5 year career, informatics has made my life as a nurse much easier. Documentation has become more efficient because it is electronically based, which allows me to spend more time with my patients. In addition, nursing informatics allows enhanced communication with doctors, because physicians can access patient records, vitals, and assessments as soon as documentation is entered in the computer. Furthermore, physicians can access patient records remotely from home which also improves care.

Nursing informatics has definitely changed our field. I can only imagine that when you started nursing 5 years ago you must have had a mountain of paperwork to do. I have only been a nurse for a little over 2 years and when I was in nursing school we did paper documentation at some of our clinical sites..it's so annoying! Reading your post made me think of something very interesting that happened to me at work today that reminded me of this class. One of my LPNs gave me a print out and said "Here, in case you need this to write your notes." She handed me a work doc. with patients' VS and little reminders she had typed for herself throughout the day. So, instead of writing these things on scrap paper throughout the day like I do, she has a word doc. open all day on a separate window and uses that while passing meds to write reminders, etc. This was so cool and it truly is a great example of how nursing informatics is affecting everything and everyone in our field.
